There was a work-party at the Range on May 17th!  I ain’t seed thet minny folk’s in a mighty long time! Thar wuz herdz o’ folk’s a-workin’ on the Main, Lever-Action/.22 ca. / Pistol Ranges, ‘round the “Clubhouse”, 45-70 range and even some folk’s playin’ at “K’boy action shootin’!” Yepper… LOT’S o’ peoples!

An that ain’t “all” too! Numerous thangs got dunn: bunches o’ weedz was made “gone”, some paint an’ nails got driv,  and lots of “Preparation” wuz made for the upcoming “BPCRS” & “Muzzle-Loader State & Territorial Championships.”

I jest wish I could rememberate all thar “NAMEZ!

Inny-who, “A BIG ‘Thanks’ to ALL who showed-up and helped”!

Thar’s s’posed t’be a Board Meetin’ in July… ‘round about the 7th (I tink). I’ll see kin I git some infurmat-ment ‘bout that…later. Heyar be some o’ the thangs thet happen’t over the past couple months!

LEVERACTION SILHOUTTE

May 3, Black’s Creek Range was a great day for Lever-action Match. We had a good turnout and some fine

scores were turned in. It was warm and balmy and not

“too” windy. (He said)

“Wayne Adams Memorial Shotgun Shoot”

Although nobody writ me a “story” ‘bout dis, I’ll at least letcha know “Whut happen’t,” k?

Thar was eleven “dedicated” (or was that, “demented?”) shooters went t’ the range for this annual event on May 14th. Judgin’ frum th’ “scores”, they had a dickens of a time! Steve Hammond repeated (again) as the annual “Champeen” with 48/50 “birds” instead of his usual 49-50/50. he must be gittin’ “old”, eh? <Grin>

Innyway, Kenny Durham held on for 2nd place with 40/50 over Jim (Steve) Lawrence’s 37/50.

 That’s aw-ite tho, thar’s ALWAYS “next year!

May “Muzzle-Stuffers!

We haved 11 shooters appear for this “quite warm” day of shootin’ the “charcoal burners.” But between the “gentle breezes” and “Arabian temperatures”, we only completed 3 matches. Now, BEFORE ya start t’ raggin’ on us about “not-enuff-guts-t’shoot-in-a-little-wind,” I kinda’ draw the line at “shootin’ Buffalo wings” while they’s on the fly! Yepper! BUT, not ONLY was the “targets”, repeatedly, takin’ off for parts unknown, so were the “Target Standz!” Well, after a couple of “launches” and several of ‘em “comin’ frum together”, Arnie (wisely) called the shoot “finished.”

And, of course, ya KNOW “I was just fixin’ t’make my move on 1st place!” (Sure I was <Grin>)

Any ways, here’s how we all wound up:

AA Class

1st Kenny “Still-water” Bowman     235-7x

3rd Cliff “Knot” Diffendaffer             222-5x

For the 2008 State Matches we had a total of 54 shooters participate in the 3-day matches.   Thirty-five entered the 60-shot Scope Match on Friday and fifty shooters took part in the iron sight 80-shot (two 40-shot events) Saturday and Sunday.

The Black’s Creek wind machine was blowing hard on Friday and Saturday but slowed up a little for Sunday’s match.

On Friday, Ee Da How’s own Frank Cornell took top honors, edging out American Falls shooter Wayne Schofield by 1 point with a score of 39 x 60.  Way to go Frank!

On Saturday, Kenny Durham finished the day with a high score of 28 x 40 to win Match 1.  Dave Gullo won Sunday’s match also scoring a 28 x 40.  However, neither Dave or Kenny could outscore the consistent shooting of Steve Morris when the aggregate for the two days was totaled up.  Steve edged out Mark Griffis by one point with a total of 54 x 80.  Steve Morris is not only very handy with breech loading black powder cartridge rifle, he is equally at ease shooting any one of his flintlock long rifles!

The final event was the random drawings for the Montana Vintage Arms rifle scope donated by MVA and the Club, and the drawing for the Shiloh 1874 Sharps Rifle.  Kenny Durham came up with the lucky ticket to win the riflescope.  Jennifer Roulet was the winner of the Shiloh Rifle.  Jenny is a great shooter and no stranger to the winner’s circle.  Congratulations to all the winners!

Idaho State & Territorial Black-Powder Championships”

Although the turnout was kinda’ “small”, we did have 35 competitors show up. There were “Biskit-Eaters”, Juniors, Ladies & Men, too. They came from: Californy, Oregan, WA, Iowa and Idaho too!  The Ideeho groups came frum up Council way clear over t’ Buhl & Idaho Falls. Some of ‘em was “old-shooters” and a few were “pilgrims” to the game, but I think an enjoyable time was had by pert’near ever- body. Now, on t’ the re-port!

(State & Territorials)

One thang thet REALLY helped keep thangs straight an’ simple was the prep-work done by Doug Mohn, A.K. Burr, and several o’ thier “cohorts,” in assembling all the “Target Packages” for EACH “Aggregate” and classification.

A.K’s li’l daughter, Sarah Hollibaugh, hepped a bunch with runnin’ targets back an forth, sortin’ ‘em, and takin’ care of the “Registration” end o’ things.

“Opening Day” of the Championships was, err, “interesting,” with the typical Black’s Creek Range “breezes” just a touch belowBanshee!” Day two started off pretty-much the same, but a few “stout hearts” went ahead and turned-in some impressive scores!  I mean targets like: 50-x, 48-xx, 46-xx, etc.

By the THIRD day, things finally “settled-down” to a light “wail” in the wind, but at least it kept “changing directions.” <Smile> Thangs progressed “nicely” from there on out though. (I’m judging this by the amount of targets starting to “flow” thru scoring and registration.)

But enuff of my trying t’tell ya about more than the shootin’… so let’s “git-to-it!

Let’s git started with them Biskit Eat’n

“Sub-Juniors!

Matches:

P-1: John M. Mosqueda took 3rd, Davis Mosqueda 2nd & 1st went to MacKenzie Lawrence with 46-x.

P-2: MacKenzie got 3rd, John M. took 2nd & Davis got 1st with a VERY fine 50-xx!

P-3: Was VERY close between MacKenzie & Davis for 2nd & 3rd as they both shot a 46-x, but John M. got 1st with a really good 48-xx!

And the “Winners” is:

            Michael Mosqueda      6th

(NEW shooter) Shelby Lawrence       5th

            Jay “Early-Bird”Edmons        4th

                        MacKenzie Lawrence 3rd

                        John M. Mosqueda     2nd (140-5x!)

Idaho Champ is Davis Mosqueda      1st  (141-3x!)

“Juniors!”

Although they wuz only 2 Juniors in competition, it WAS a “Competition!” Defending “Champion”, Chelsea Lundy had her hands full when James Sumpter came out to “Play.” They went back & forth from match to match but, when all the targets were shot and the scores added up, Chelsea Lundy got the nod for the “Championship” with 202-4x to 201.

“Idaho Women’s Championship”

This year’s competition was a bit “differ’nt”, in that 4 Ladies vied for the title this year (And I’m glad they did!) Here’s how the “Matches” went!

S-1: Rifle, O-hand 25 yd, 6-bull: 1st Mary McFall, 2nd Tammy Edmons, 3rd Chelsea Lundy.

S-2: Rifle, Bench, 100 yd, 3-Bull: 1st Mary McFall, 2nd Tammy Edmons & 3rd went to Sarah Hollibaugh.

S-3: Rifle, X-stix, 50 yd, 100 yd Bull: 1st Chelsea Lundy, 2nd Mary McFall & 3rd Tammy Edmons.

S-4: Rifle, O-hand, 50 yd, 100 yd Bull: 1st Tammy Edmons, 2nd Chelsea Lundy & 3rd Mary McFall.

S-5: Rifle, X-stix, 50 yd, 3-Bull: 1st Chelsea Lundy, 2nd Mary McFall & 3rd Tammy Edmons.

S-6: Pistol, 2yards: 1st Sarah Hollibaugh, 2nd Mary  McFall & 3rd Tammy Edmons.

And the “Idaho Women’s Champions” am:

4th Place (NEW Shooter!) Sarah Hollibaugh

3rd Place Chelsea (Junior) Lundy with 182-x

2nd Place Tammy Edmons with 183-xx

And the “Champion” is Mary McFall with 236-x!

And now… the “MEN’s Championship!” with “Match Results”:

R-1: Pistol @ 25 yards: 1st went to Don Rose with 94-x, 2nd was John Mosqueda @ 92-x and Kenny Bowman in 3rd with 92.

(The rest are “Rifle Matches”)

R-2: Bench @ 50 yd, 6-Bull: 1st was Mike Bowman with 46, 2nd John Mosqueda @ 45 and Roger Schaefer in 3rd with 44.

R-3: Bench, 100 yd, 3-Bull: 1st Mike Bowman with 46, 2nd Roger McFall @45-x & 3rd Bob Bottoms with 42.
R-4: X-stix, 50 yd, 6-Bull: 1st Curt Rineer with 45-x and John Mosqueda’s 45-x was 2nd (farthest ball out) and Bob Bottoms with 44.

R-5: O-hand, 50 yd, 100 yd Bull: The “Top-3” each shot a 44 so this was a “tough-one” to figure out. It finally got sorted out using “farthest ball out” via “overlays” & “micrometers.” 1st John Mosqueda, 2nd Roger McFall & 3rd Mike Bowman.

(State & Territorials)

R-6: O-hand, 25 yd, 6-Bull: John Mosqueda took 1st @ 47-x, Curt Rineer was 2nd with 44 & Terry Kamstra had 42 for 3rd.

R-7: Bench, 50 yd,6-Bull: Bob Bottoms took 1st with 48, followed by 2nd  Ken Laverty @ 47 & Roger in 3rd with 45.

R-8: X-stix, 100 yd, 3-Bull: This was another “close-one” with the “Top 2” @ 46-x each. The same methods were used on these also. Bob Bottoms wound up 1st with Ken Laverty in 2nd & Cliff Diffendaffer in 3rd with 45.

R-9: X-stix, 100 yd, Dbl. Buff: This was a difficult target due to our “normal” wind-conditions. 1st was Bob Bottoms 45-x, 2nd Roger Schaefer with 43 & 3rd Roger McFall with 42.

And the “2008 Men’s Muzzle-Loader Champion?”

Well, the “Top Three” are: 3rd Roger McFall from Oregon, 2nd Mike Bowman (Kenny’s son) and 1st goes to “defending ChampionBob Bottoms of Idaho Falls!

Had enuff yet? O-Tay… here’s the “Territorial Aggregate Champions”, too!

A: Offhand Championship: THIS was one of the MOST active aggregates with 8 shooters!

The first SIX shooters got all the medals, but a “Good-Time” was had by all! Overall, 1st place went to Roger McFall with 161-xxx, then John Mosqueda with 152-x and Jim Lawrence’s 143-x.

B: Flintlock Championship: Sorry I didn’t get a chance t’play in this one! Terry Kamstra from Ohio was giving some pretty good lessons in this event. Although all the competitors managed to “sneak-in” and snag a medal, when all was said and done, Terry Kamstra took the 1st place medal home with him. Vince Pelly took 2nd place and Ray Gooding got 3rd

Scott Jones grabbed a couple of match medals, too, 3rd in match one and 2nd in match 3.

C: Bench Rest Championship: Here’s where the “big-guns” come out to play, most of’m weighing in around 14 (or more) pounds! It’s definitely a “specialized event for specialized equipment,” but that didn’t stop several Idaho Boyz from giving it a whirl! Ken Laverty of Calif took most of the matches and the “Champeenship”. He was followed by Roger McFall of Oregon and Ken Bowman frum ID. Of note, too, are Cliff Diffendaffer who got 3rd place in the first match and Ray Gooding who took the 1st Place medal in match 4.

D: Musket Championship:

Quite a few folk’s dragged out thar “Muskets” and had a go at this aggregate. Medals for 1st thru 3rd were fairly well scattered, but A.K. Burr managed t’ whup everbody else in this contest posting a 218 score. He was follerd by Scott “Forgetful” Jones & Cliff Diffendaffer. The other fellerz dunn good, too.

E: One Gun Championship:

Thar wuz 5 shooters in this one; Jim Lawrence, Roger McFall, Roger Schaefer, Ray Gooding & Vince Pelly! Like several of the matches, the 2nd & 3rd place medals were well scattered but, Most of the 1st place ones went to Jim (Steve) Lawrence! Here’s how they “finished”: Lawrence 1st, McFall 2nd & Schaefer in 3rd . But it was “close” all-the-way!

F: Cross-Stick Championship:

The medals in this one were distributed fairly evenly (EXCEPT) the 1st Place medals. Those went to Bob Bottoms. Rodger McFall of Oregon did well, gittin’  2nd place followed by our “Prez”, A.K. Burr.

G: Ladies Championship:

In this one, Mary McFall was in a “Class by herself” shooting a 153 to take 1st place.

H: Junior Championship: Didn’t do this one.

I: Skeet Championship:  Nobody

J: Trap Championship:

Several gave it a try but Bob Bottoms wound-up on top with 29, followed by Ken Bowman with 28 & Curt Rineer with 27. All VERY good shooters!

K: Pistol Championship: Usually, this is one of the

most contested aggregates… but not THIS year. Only 4 men shot. Scott Jones from up Cambridge way, got 1st over-all, followed by Roger Schaefer and then me. Terry Kasmtra made a REAL good showing, too.

L: Primitive Championship: Only 6 “players” this time. That’s unfortunate, because it’s a lot of “fun.” Pert’near everybody got “match medals” but I got      (State & Territorials) 1st Place this year. My score? Well, it were 168-x, follered by John Mosqueda @ 128 & Cliff Diffendaffer @ 128, too. The “Tie-Breaker” is the “Fire-starting-time” which put John in 2nd with 5.2 seconds & slid Cliff into 3rd. Jay Edmons & Ray Gooding caught a couple of medals, too, along with a whole lotta fun!

M: Sub-Junior Championship: 7 Biscuit-Eaters, the most we’ve had in years, vied for this aggregate!

Some mighty-fine shootin’ was in evidence as the difference between 1st & 2nd place was just an “X”. John M. Mosqueda used his dad’s rifle to fire a fine 93-xx to MacKenzie Larence’s 93-x. 3rd place in  this went to Mackenzie’s “little-sister” (ANDnew-shooter”) Shelby Lawrence with a fine 80-xx! Davis Mosqueda edged out Jay “J.T.” Edmons for 4th with 78 to 77.

N: Hunters Championship: This aggregate saw more activity this year, as 6 people tried to hit “critter targets.”  Everybody got “sumpthin’,” but there can only be 3top-shooters.” They are: 1st Jim (Steve) Lawrence with 128-xx, 2nd Vince Pelly with 125-x and 3rd went to Ray Gooding with 109-x.

O: Sighted Smoothbore Championship: Only 2 shooters in this one, but A.K. Burr took “Top Honors” with a fine 159 to Roger Schaefer’s 155-x.

P: Unlimited Long Hunters Championship: This aggregate, too, had 6 competitors. And, as before, “ever-body got-sumpthin’!” BUT, when the critterz wuz counted, Ray Gooding got 1st A. K. Burr 2nd & Vince Pelly was 3rd. The spread was only 10 points.

Q: Ladies Offhand Championship: Two ladies squared-off for this aggregate and although Tammy Edmons gave her “best”, it just wasn’t quite enuff t’beat Mary McFall… this time.

R: Smoothbore Championship: Terry Kamstra came all the way from Ohio to give “Smoothbore Lessons”… an’ he did! Apparently, Scott Jones & A.K. Burr were paying attention, cuz THEY came in 2nd & 3rd right behind Terry. The scores? O-Tay; Terry turned in a 106, Scotty got 105-x & A.K. shot 102. An’ “me?”… only 3 points better than Cliff Diffendaffer. <Grin>

T: Ladies Trap: Nobody wanted to try!

U: Ladies Hunter Championship:

Again, two of the four ladies competed. They are Mary McFall & Tammy Edmons… and, again, Mary came out on top… but it weren’t no “runaway!”

V: Cartridge Championship: We finally got a “New Shooter” in this class as well. Doug Mohn is his name and he did really well against a couple of “veteran” shooters. The highlight (to me) was getting to score Terry Kamstra’s100-9X” target.

Although this IS a “MOST Excellent target”, he just couldn’t keep up with Arnie. They wound-up; A. K. Burr 1st @ 323-6x, Terry Kamstra 2nd @ 272-10x and Doug Mohn 3rd with 194-x.

W: Light Bench Championship: This one was THE most sought after aggregate. I don’t know “why” though. <Grin> Here, again, the “specialty guns”, I think, made the difference. Roger McFall took 1st, Roger Schaefer 2nd and Ken Laverty 3rd. The “point-spread” between 1st & 3rd was 7 points.

IB: Inline Bench Championship

4 fellerz tried this one out; A.K. Burr, Terry Kamstra (Ohio), Roger Schaefer & Vince Pelly (Oregon). Several “50’s” were shot during this one but, when the smoke had cleared, somewhat, Vince Pelly took 1st with 149-xxx followed by Roger Schaefer, A.K. & Terry Kamstra.

IO: Inline Offhand Championship

The same 4 guys tried this’n, too, but the outcome changed. A.K. Burr took 1st with 115, followed by Roger Schaefer, Vince Pelly & Terry Kamstra.

(Special) Tri-State Championship

Only 4 “guys” tried these “Animal” targets from 25 to 100 yards away. Although A.K. Burr shot a “50” on the “5 Aminal” target, everybody else still “tried hard!Arnie got “Top Honors” with a total of 183-xx, followed by John Mosqueda, Ray Gooding and Jim Lawrence.

(Special) 75th Anniversary Championship

Only 3 people tried this target. But the results are:

1st Terry Kamstra of Ohio with 29, Ray Gooding of Gooding, ID with 24 & Vince Pelly of Oregon @13.
